Pre-ordering allows you to reserve a product before it goes on sale, from the latest device to a limited edition. It secures access to a high-demand item, but commits you to a date that is sometimes distant and subject to change. Understanding when you pay, what is guaranteed, and how to cancel prevents unpleasant surprises between the reservation and the release.

Understanding pre-orders

Reserving before the release

Pre-ordering is the act of reserving a product whose release has been announced but is not yet effective. You are promised priority access to stock on the launch day. It is especially useful for items likely to sell out quickly, where pre-ordering guarantees a copy that a standard sale might cause you to miss.

What a pre-order does and does not guarantee

A pre-order guarantees a reserved copy, but rarely a firm date. The price is generally locked at the amount displayed at the time of reservation. Read carefully what is promised: priority availability does not mean delivery on the release day, especially in the event of high demand for the product.

Placing a pre-order

Payment upon ordering or upon shipping

Depending on the site, pre-orders are charged immediately or only upon shipment. Immediate payment ties up your money until the release, sometimes for several months. When possible, opt for payment upon dispatch, which keeps your funds available and limits the risk if the product is cancelled.

Tracking your pre-order

The status of your pre-order, the estimated date, and its progress can be tracked in your help and account management area. Checking regularly allows you to spot a date change without waiting for an email. This is also where the transition from reservation to actual shipping is confirmed.

When the date changes

Release delays or stockouts

A postponed release date is common with pre-orders, especially for new products. A delay alone does not disadvantage you as long as the price and your copy remain guaranteed. Repeated delays, or delays without a new date, however, justify reconsidering whether to maintain the reservation.

Cancelling a pre-order

As long as the product has not shipped, a pre-order can generally be cancelled free of charge, as the sale is not yet concluded. The procedure can be requested via the contact page if it is not offered directly. Any payment already charged must then be fully refunded to you.

At product release

Delivery issues

Unfulfilled pre-orders, products that differ from the description, or forgotten shipments: these cases are handled by support, provided you have your reservation confirmation. A pre-order gives you priority; it does not require you to waive any of your buyer rights. Prolonged delays offer the same recourse as a standard order.

Recurring pre-orders and subscriptions

For a series, a collection, or regular releases, a subscription can automatically reserve each new entry. Check the frequency and the ability to skip a title that does not interest you, so you do not pre-order a series of items when you only want a portion of them.
